In financial services, trust is everything. The moment you lose a customer's trust is the moment you lose that customer. Partnering with Cyera was key to building and continuing to maintain that trust with our customers.

Challenges

A UK fintech scale-up is on a simple mission: to make it easier for consumers to finance a major purchase. Its data and analytics leader is blunt about what powers it. "Data is the lifeblood of a lending business," he says. It is also some of the most sensitive data a person will ever share: name, date of birth, address, and the kind of information most important to an individual. The company already had a well-structured approach to protecting that data. But as any fast-growing business captures more and more of it, that data naturally spreads into the data warehouse, the wider ecosystem, and everyday documents and spreadsheets. The team needed to know every single place personal customer information lived, who was viewing it, and where it flowed.

Solution

The company evaluated a range of data security providers, and one thing set Cyera apart. "A lot of other providers perhaps go very broad," the leader says, "but Cyera went deep. They had a real focus on what matters." Cyera's AI-driven scanning classifies many millions of rows of customer data rapidly and flags potential issues to the engineering team, bulk remediation fixes large sets of sensitive data at once instead of one record at a time, and a Slack integration surfaces new findings where the team already works. Several of those capabilities, including bulk remediation, the Slack integration, and tailored views, began as challenges the team brought to Cyera and were built together; many are now available to every Cyera customer.

Results

The first full scan told the story. The company identified around 170 million potential sensitive instances and, through identification and minimization, brought that down to just 500,000, a reduction the leader puts at 99.9%, in his words: "well ahead of our expectations and industry standards." Two years in, the relationship has shifted from cleaning up the past to getting ready for AI. His view on the order of operations is direct: "AI on top of shaky data is actually going to be in real trouble. It all has to be built on great data foundations." With those foundations in place, his engineers spend less time on manual review and more on building, and the company can move into AI with customer data protected. His verdict: "I would definitely recommend Cyera as a data security solution."
